Spicy Green Beans

Spicy Green Beans

There is someone in my household who eats beans any which way … and it’s not me! The only kind of beans that I like are green beans.

I came across a recipe for 5-minute spicy beans, made with green beans, so I had to give it a try. Also because the other someone (my hubby, who is the one who eats lots of beans) absolutely loves spicy green beans.

This dish comes together in just minutes and can be served as a side or main dish. Full disclosure – we ate them directly out of the pan! I didn’t make enough the first time I made them, so the second time round I made a double batch and we ate all of those in one sitting. They are sweet, spicy and crisp, coated with the most delicious glaze and loads of sesame seeds.

Spicy Green Beans

Course Main Course, Side Dish

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp avocado oil
  • 300 g (10 ounces) green beans
  • 1 clove garlic grated
  • 1 inch knob ginger peeled and grated
  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp tamari or soy sauce
  • 1 ½ tsp sambal oelek
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • ¼ cup sesame seeds
  • Juice of ½ a lime

Instructions

  • In a large sauté pan or cast iron skillet over high heat, add oil and green beans.
  • Toss in oil to coat the beans, then leave them to char for 4-5 minutes per side, flipping in between sides.
  • While the beans are cooking, combine garlic, ginger, sesame oil, soy sauce, sambal oelek, and maple syrup in a small bowl.
  • Once the beans are cooked to your liking, remove them from the heat. Wait 2-3 minutes for the pan to cool slightly, then pour the sauce over and toss to combine. The sauce should coat the beans nicely from the residual heat.
  • When the beans are coated, return the pan to high heat for 1 minute and sprinkle over sesame seeds, stirring frequently so they don’t burn.
  • Turn the heat off and squeeze the lime juice over the beans. Serve immediately.
  • Recipe inspired by https://www.thisiscrumb.com/food I made a few adjustments to the original recipe.

I hope you enjoy this recipe!

Hi Sara – nice to “meet” you. Your photos are lovely and I left a mention for Gord that I feel as if I have fallen down the most delightful rabbit hole:-) Please tell me what sambal oelek is and where I might buy it?
